Composer/Arranger: Jazz/Afro-Caribbean/ Brazilian
Dr. Marlow’s jazz compositions span big band arrangements in various genres, including ballads, swing tunes, blues, and Latin-jazz for small ensembles. He has also arranged Hebraic melodies in jazz, Afro-Caribbean, Brazilian, and classical styles.
Marlow’s compositions gained recognition from his first album, A Summer Afternoon With You (2005), with journalist Len Dobbin praising his work alongside Grammy-winning composer Maria Schneider. His compositions feature on 33 indie albums and appear on eight albums by other labels.
Notably, four of Marlow’s big band charts appear on Grammy-nominated albums, including Bobby Sanabria's West Side Story Reimagined (2018) and Big Band Urban Folktales (2007). His arrangements of “Me Acuerdo De Ti” and “Broken Heart” were featured on Latin-Grammy nominated albums, and his “Let There Be Swing” appeared on the Que Viva Harlem album (2014).
Marlow's works have been performed by prominent jazz ensembles such as the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop Big Band, The Numinous Orchestra, and The Manhattan School of Music Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra.
He studied jazz with NEA Jazz Master Dr. Billy Taylor and other notable musicians, and has been a voting member of the National Academy for Recording Arts and Sciences since 2006.
Composer: Classical
Dr. Marlow's classical compositions include fugues, chansons, waltzes, lullabies, string quartets, duets for various instruments, electronic works, and chamber pieces for winds and strings. His larger works include a chamber orchestra suite and an all-strings orchestra piece, Undminished.
His compositions have been performed by ensembles such as the American Modern Ensemble, Kandinsky and Corigliano String Quartets, Circadia Woodwind Quintet, and the Sylvan Winds, along with virtuoso pianists Craig Ketter, Nataliya Medvedovskaya, and others.
Marlow’s electronic works include 48 Rows in One Minute, performed as part of the 60×60 project in 2003, and Arturo's Reverie, which was choreographed at Galapolus Performance Space in 2008.
He studied classical composition with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Paul Moravec, Maurice Peress, and George Tsontakis, completing his degrees in music composition at CUNY and Hunter College. He has also undertaken doctoral work at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.

Media Producer/Director/Writer
Dr. Marlow served as president of Media Enterprises Inc. for almost 25 years, leading the production of over 350 video and 125 radio programs for more than 80 clients across various industries, including media, healthcare, and finance. He collaborated with numerous celebrities and executives on projects in marketing, PR, and corporate communications.
Marlow has received two dozen awards for excellence in programming, including honors from the New York Festivals, Questar Awards, and CINE. In 2022, he completed a feature-length documentary based on his book Jazz in China, which was selected for 12 film festivals and won several awards.
Previously, he co-produced the documentary short Boarded & Broken in 2020, exploring New York City retail outlets during the pandemic and protests, with Marlow’s original score. In 2015, he completed the short Zikkaron/Kristallnacht: A Family Story, which received the 2016 John Culkin Award and was featured in 18 film festivals.


Performer: The Heritage Ensemble
Dr. Eugene Marlow is the leader and founder of The Heritage Ensemble, a quintet focused on performing his original compositions and arrangements of Hebraic melodies in jazz, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, and classical styles. Presenter
Marlow served as the senior curator of the Milt Hinton Jazz Perspectives concert series at Baruch College (CUNY) from 2000 to 2018. As co-chair of the Hinton Committee, he expanded the series from one concert to four annually. He is also a former Director of Media Relations and Treasurer for the New York Composers Circle, where he helped produce their four-concert season.

Author and Journalist
Dr. Marlow has authored 13 books on topics ranging from communications and technology to culture. His writing extends to over 400 articles and chapters published in professional and academic journals across the globe, including in the United States, Germany, Greece, Japan, China, and Russia.
His most recent book, Jazz in China: From Dance Hall Music to Individual Freedom of Expression (University Press of Mississippi, 2018), explores the evolution of jazz in China. Marlow was also a contributing editor for www.jazz.com, a role for which he was honored with the 2010 James W. Carey Award for Journalism Excellence from the Media Ecology Association. Additionally, he contributes to Chamber Music Magazine and JAZZed Magazine, further showcasing his influence in the field.

Educator
Dr. Marlow has been a professor at Baruch College (CUNY) since 1988, teaching courses in media and culture as part of the Department of Journalism & The Writing Professions. He has received numerous distinguished teaching awards and fellowships, including from the Direct Marketing Educational Foundation and the Poynter Institute for Media Studies. He is chair of Baruch's Educational Technology Committee (2020-2024).
